If you remember, back in August when we first got our tractor, we also were gifted a compost bin. It was exciting because it was one more step we could use in reducing our waste. We eat a lot of veggies and make a lot of salad. For the scraps that I did not use in my broths, I would throw them away and I hated that because all I could think of was, “man, this would make great soil.” [Read more…] about Compost: Reducing Our Waste
I Have A Citrus Tree Flower!
Ok, not much has really been happening on our lil urban homestead. The most excitement we’ve had was with Willie, and fixing our tractor. Both of which are still sitting in their respective places. One fairing better than the other. So, things have kind of slowed down. And since the hurricane and having to clear out our planters outside in preparation, we haven’t really been growing much. Except our citrus trees.

Food Recalls and What YOU Can Do About It
Why is learning to be self-sufficient or for some God-dependable so important? Because of stuff like this, yet another recall. On Monday, the USDA Food Safety and Inspection department put out a health notice that made [Read more…] about Food Recalls and What YOU Can Do About It
Trellising Those Cucumbers
Hey All. I hope you are having a happy Monday. I just wanted to share with you a quick trellis project I undertook for our cucumbers. It started out with me tossing some cucumber seeds into our second self-watering planter. This one was unfinished, but I figured I had time to put the wooden cover on it later. Boy, that was a mistake. Those cucumber plants took off with growth and before I knew it, I needed a trellis! [Read more…] about Trellising Those Cucumbers
The Lion’s Mane Mushrooms Project – Update

If you recall back in April of this year, we went to one of our favorite gardening stores and purchased a log that was inoculated with Lion’s Mane mushroom spores. Prior to this neither myself or Deidra had any experience with growing mushrooms [Read more…] about The Lion’s Mane Mushrooms Project – Update
Four New Additions To Our Homestead!
Antoine is so kind. He knows I have the skills to turn things brown that should be green. Yet and still he bought me something we’ve wanted for a very long time. Every day in order for me to drink water, I drink it with some kind of citrus – either lemon or lime. Do you know how much those things are costing in the store now days? Good lord, way too much. [Read more…] about Four New Additions To Our Homestead!
My First Attempt at Hydroponics
My very first attempt at hydroponics…smh. It was not good at all. It was pretty sad in my opinion, but like all newbies, we live, we learn, and we grow (see what I did there?). However, I just wanted to share with you my mistakes, so that you do not make the same ones. [Read more…] about My First Attempt at Hydroponics
The Lion’s Mane Mushrooms Project
This past weekend, we decided to start a new project. Well, it wasn’t a planned project, it just kind of spontaneously happened after visiting one of our favorite gardening stores. Below is a video of how we are getting started.
Stay tuned as we update you guys. If you have grown mushrooms before, especially this type, please let us know. We’d love to hear from you.
UPDATE – July 2, 2018:
Be sure to hope on over to lion’s mane project update, to read about what’s been happening with the project.
